2017 Looking Forward

Vision for Motomo

-- James O'Rourke, Motomo Coordinator

As we envision our future and prepare for it, what becomes obvious is that some fundamental change is inevitable, and there's no dispute that the best way for a community to deal with it is to face it head on. 30yrs ago the Men’s Weekend was created to address the fight between men and the emerging feminist movement. While no longer focussed on the battle, we are now dealing with a generation born from that strife. So, as we move forward, we must evolve ourselves to serve this new generation of men and women and be aware of the strong feelings that come up when things are done or look different. Even the strongest of men may get swayed from their purpose when they engage the drama or become emotional.

Most men don’t plan very far into their future and only have a general idea of their lives over the next five years. Five to 15 years from now there is very little meaningful detail. And, hardly any, when you get to 20-30 years from now.

For Core Leadership, however, having a long-term vision of our community's future is critical. The decisions of today shape our future health, vitality, and well-being. Knowing, speaking and implementing our core values into everything we do is how we achieve that future. The "30,000-foot overview" or vision becomes the foundation on which our legacy is based. This process focuses on our values as our greatest community assets. When we assess the future it must be based on our shared values and our common purpose. The shift that we have made to a purpose driven organization in the last 2 years has allowed for the creation of a future where all our men have a stake in the direction of their leadership. Our common values and shared purpose say we must work together and implement the standards necessary to achieve our vision.

Our plan moving forward requires 3 simple things from every man:

  1. Every man is clear on his current purpose whether that be self sufficiency or a higher purpose
  2. Every team is clear and in action to fulfill on the purpose of Motomo Men’s Teams (below)
  3. The men of Motomo are generous with living their healthy masculine presence out in the world so that they are generous and empower their fellow men, women and children.

Motomo's leadership has now been organized into 3 pillars, each with their own leadership and focus, and each serving the purpose of Motomo.

Pillar #1: The Men

-- Troy Wilkinson, Leader of the Men

Men's teams, this is what the Motomo Men's Pillar is made of. The Purpose of Motomo Men's Teams is to provide a space for men to serve each other by helping each man on his team close the gap between the man he is being today and the man he truly wants to be, learning to increase influence and inspire action as a way of life, and discovering and serving his purpose. The many opportunities created by men serving their purpose will ensure Motomo's legacy.

The programs within Motomo exist exclusively to assist men and teams in serving their purpose and the purpose of Motomo. We will be bold in our development and management of programs. We will make decisions based on requirements and evidence of fact. We will take no cards off the table for what and how our programs will develop. Tradition is important, serving the purpose is essential.

MenRegions and tribes are committed fully, without ambiguity to serving their men and doing so within the Motomo Men’s Teams Program. Whether a man is operating at the level of team or is in service to humanity, he will have a place in Motomo, though staying in Motomo will require sacrifice and commitment from every man. This is because every man deserves men that will help them close the gap. Since we do this through teams, teams will maintain a common purpose and have basic standards. Every team is required to create and maintain their own agreements. Additionally, as the level of service required of a man increases there will be opportunities in tribe leadership and programs to serve that man as he serves the men of his tribe. There are levels of opportunity above tribe for men who have a personal purpose that serves men and is in alignment with Motomo’s purpose.

Our commitment to the men of Motomo is to maintain the vision, provide high standards, create clear agreements, and hold ourselves and others accountable to them. We will do this by maintaining a masculine presence and creating evidence-based performance indicators. It will be our mission to increase the impact of our men by empowering them to serve others and to be served by doing so.

Pillar #2: Outreach

-- Donald Todrin, Leader of the Mission

Three years ago, the men of Motomo backed a vision of 5 million men committed to living with a healthy masculine presence engaged in fulfilling the purpose of Motomo while becoming the man they always wanted to be. To fulfill on this vision, we are beginning to pursue the following programs, designed to expand our reach and enroll many more men in our journey.

  1. An organized outreach to the thousands of MW Graduates who have experienced the weekend and for their own reasons are no longer or never have been involved on a Motomo men’s team.
  2. An effort to expand our mission beyond our graduate community by bringing our values to the public via the Summit and other organized events.
  3. Partnership with Women’s Organizations to be engaged in the process of truly creating community with our female counterparts by implementing community building activities and programs.

Pillar #3: Support Services

-- Gary Menezes, Leader of Support Services

To powerfully serve both the mission and the men, Motomo needs to be a fast-growing, high-performance organization, with minimum duplication and waste. The 3rd pillar handles the overlap between the other two pillars, with an eye for best-practices and reuse. We will expand existing initiatives and forge new structures which cause Motomo's inevitable success.

  1. Training & Development: The focus will be continuing to tune our flagship MYAWTB and MLT trainings, while broadening the offerings of trainings available.
  2. Marketing: This initiative will bring our marketing to the modern age, with a web presence, internet marketing, video campaigns, social campaigns and the like.
  3. Communications: Maximizing readily available technology and coordinating its use will be the drive of this initiative so men and leadership stay informed.
  4. Finance & Admin: Motomo is becoming a non-profit with charitable status, which opens many doors for us, but it also requires a higher level of rigor in our standards around money and protocol - the focus of this initiative.
